Christmas and New Year can be such an exciting time of year but they can also be one of the most stressful for many of us. If you regularly find yourself anxious and frazzled over the holidays, try our tips for staying calm and in control!
Focus on what you can control
You may not be able to control every aspect of Christmas and New Year but there is one area that you have complete control over: your thoughts and behaviours. Let go of as much of the rest as you can.
Over the holidays, you can quickly feel obliged to say yes to everything and it’s a fast track to burnout. Setting boundaries and saying no to anything that you can’t make the energy or headspace for is key. Prioritise quality over quantity. And focus your energy on what really matters to you over the holidays. It’s okay to say no to the rest!
Listen to your body
If you don’t want to overindulge or drink lots of alcohol, there’s no shame in not going along with the status quo. It’s easy to get swept away with the holiday spirit but listening to what your body really wants can help you feel calmer and in control.
Notice too if you start to forget yourself and put commitments and engagements ahead of your self-care. Take some time every day just for yourself. It’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity for surviving the holidays with minimal stress!
Move away from perfectionism
How often do you find yourself caught up in making Christmas “perfect”? It’s very common and it’s a huge source of stress. Put the focus on making memories and experiences instead. If we’ve learnt anything from the pandemic, it’s that the smallest things can mean the most.
Move every day
It’s tempting to lounge around over the holidays but this can leave you feeling sluggish and fatigued. Even if you really don’t feel like it, try to keep moving.
Exercise boosts your mood, keeps you feeling calmer and gets the “feel good” endorphins flowing. You don’t need to do an intense workout to get the benefits. A gentle walk is more than enough.
Limit your social media consumption
Spending less time on social media over the holidays can help you reduce anxiety and feel calmer, especially if it often makes you fall into the comparison trap.
Remember: a lot of what you see on social media is a glossy version of real life. Other people have Christmas stress too. They just present a different version of reality!
Don’t overdo the sugar
It may feel traditional to eat tons of sugar over the holidays but it can be a culprit for anxiety. Sugar impacts your hormones, insulin levels and blood sugar - all of which spike anxiety. If you want to feel calmer, definitely stay away from it (or minimise your intake, at least!).
Healthy, low-sugar treats are a smart move. You can still feel like you’re indulging without the negative effects. We loved the Lexis Treats Blueberry Bliss Protein Bar from our Nurture Collection and the Squirrel Sisters Peanut Raspberry Bar from our Summer Nights Collection for an example of just how to choose yummy treats that aren’t a sugar bomb!
Soothe Your Stress Away
If you can’t avoid stress and need to take some time out to feel calmer, a soothing bath can work wonders.
Our Nurture Collection contained the Malako Magnesium and Spirulina Bath Salts & Scrub. Magnesium is a natural stress-buster and it’s a nutrient that many of us are deficient in. When it’s absorbed through the skin, it’s much easier for your body to make the most of it.
There’s something incredibly soothing about sipping away your stress and bringing yourself to a place of calm and we’ve loved introducing you to so many delicious and calming teas in our Collections.
Our Winter Harmony Collection gave a taste of the Oh My Flo Wellness Tea, an organic adaptogenic tea that promises a “hug in a mug” whenever you need it. Perfect for those times when you need five minutes away from the madness (during the holidays or any other time of the year!).
Our Rest & Rejuvenate Collection included the Neal's Yard Remedies Quiet Time Tea.
Sip on these gorgeous teas for sweet dreams (over the holidays and beyond!). Failing that, a mug of chamomile usually does the trick!
