How to Implement Hygge In Your Daily Life

The Danish concept of Hygge is all about embracing the simple things in life to help you feel happier and more content. Just what we all need for a wellbeing boost after such a stressful 2020!

If you enjoy cosying up with a good book when it’s raining outside or indulging in a hot chocolate as the snow falls, you’ve already started to embrace Hygge.

Hygge is thought to be one of the reasons why Denmark is one of the happiest countries in the world. No wonder the rest of us want to steal their secrets and get the same benefits!

Luckily, it’s easy to introduce more Hygge into your life and we’ve got some tips to help you do it.

Light Some Candles

Candles are a really important part of a Hygge atmosphere. They create a soothing and calming environment, especially during the winter months. For extra Hygge, choose a candle that is made from natural ingredients.

Our November Comfort Collection contained the Fais Botanicals Nourish It Soy Candle to get you started with creating a Hygge atmosphere. The blend of ylang-ylang, bergamot and essential oils is both comforting and therapeutic. And because it’s made from soy wax rather than paraffin, it burns cleaner and for longer.

Light the Fire

Spending time with friends and family outdoors in front of a fire is popular in Scandinavia, even in the depths of winter!

You don’t have to get outside though - if you’ve got a fireplace, snuggling up in front of a cosy fire introduces some instant Hygge.

Savour a Comforting Hot Chocolate

Hot drinks are a great way to Hygge. Take a trip to Denmark and you’ll find a vast array of cafes - probably for this very reason!

Pop on the kettle and enjoy a comforting hot drink. Coffee is a popular choice in Denmark but don’t worry if you’re not a big fan of it.

Our November Comfort Collection box included the gorgeous Cocoba 53% Dark Chocolate Hot Chocolate Spoon. This dreamy Belgian chocolate drink is a comforting take on traditional hot chocolate.

Dress for Comfort

Dressing in whatever makes you feel comfy is another easy way to get more Hygge in your life. And that includes joggers! In Danish, there’s even a Hygge-related word for wearing clothes that you wouldn’t necessarily wear outside of your home in - Hyggebukser.

Find a Cosy Nook

If you’ve got somewhere cosy to curl up, you’re well on the way to being more Hygge. Make it ultra snug and cosy with throws and blankets. If it’s got low lighting or you can add candles, you’re onto a winner! You can use it for reading, meditation, journaling or anything that helps you feel calm and happy.

Snuggle Up In Throws and Blankets

As you probably guessed from the previous paragraph, burrowing under throws and blankets is another must for getting more Hygge in your life. Comfy cushions, oversized jumpers, and cosy socks are great moves too.

Make Memories With Loved Ones

Spending time with loved ones is a key part of Hygge. Keeping a healthy balance between home and work is really important for this so you have more time to be with the people who matter most to you.

Put your phone aside and get immersed in good company, even if the pandemic restrictions mean you can only see some people online at the moment.

Spend Time Outdoors

Even spending just a few minutes outdoors can boost your wellbeing. Taking a walk in nature every day is an easy way to add more Hygge into your life.

Practice Self-Care Rituals

Togetherness is important for Hygge but it’s also crucial to have some time for yourself.

To be more Hygge, you’ll need to embrace slowing down and giving yourself time to relax. Think mindful living rather than rushing around on autopilot.

This might look like lingering over your morning coffee or breakfast and savouring your meals.

Self-care rituals such as yoga, journaling, meditation, losing yourself in a good book and practising positive affirmations are also great ideas for being more Hygge.

Pampering your body is totally Hygge too and our November Comfort Collection contained some gorgeous self-care treats. The Nourish London Antioxidant Multi-Tasking Super Balm and Farryn Amber Superfruit Face Milk are comforting and nourishing pick-me-ups for your skin that you can indulge in every day.
