Summer Wellness Rituals To Stay Healthy and Calm

We often think of summer as a carefree time that's relaxed and fun. But one study has found that women often have high cortisol levels during the summer months compared to winter. 

If you’re implementing Hygge in your daily life in the winter, the contentment and happiness it brings can suddenly disappear as summer approaches. But if you’re also maintaining wellness rituals that help you stay mentally and physically well over the summer, it can be a truly idyllic time of year. 

Do what works for you

With the warmer weather and longer nights, summer can be a whirlwind of social events, days out and soaking up the sun. This is great if you genuinely want to pack your summer with fun activities but it can be stressful and exhausting if you’re feeling obliged to. 

Self-care can take lots of different forms and it's okay to do what's right for you. If you’d rather slow down and enjoy a less frantic summer, think of it as a non-negotiable self-care ritual.

Stay hydrated

Many of us are at least mildly dehydrated at the best of times, which only gets worse when the weather hots up. Dehydration can make you feel tired and is a common culprit for brain fog, headaches, anxiety, and increased pain. Getting even a little bit dehydrated can make you feel more anxious, which is very natural given that dehydration is a physical stress on the body.

If you're not a big fan of water, try infusing it with fresh fruit and vegetables to make it tastier. Coconut water is another great choice, especially for balancing electrolytes.

Cleansing is crucial

Taking care of your skin is a must in the summer. Staying cool in the summer 

We all look forward to warm summer days but sometimes the heat can get too much. If you melted in the heatwave recently, these tips are for you! 

  • Stay out of the sun in the hottest part of the day where you can. If you want to get your vitamin D, do this earlier in the morning or in the evenings.

  • Wear light cotton or linen clothing

  • Have plenty of cold foods to hand - frozen fruits, ice cream, frozen yoghurt and ice lollies are perfect! 

  • Put a cold, damp towel on the back of your neck. 

  • Keep your skincare products in the fridge or freezer for a cool boost when you apply them.
